Richard Samuel Attenborough
On August 29, 1923, Richard Samuel Attenborough was born. He was an English actor, producer, and businessman. He served as the life president of Chelsea FC, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). During the Second World War, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force and worked in the film section. He took part in multiple bombing flights over Europe and documented the action on camera while sitting in the rear gunner’s seat. He was the elder brother of John Attenborough, an automotive executive, and Sir David Attenborough, a broadcaster. Between 1945 and his passing, he married the actress Sheila Sim.
Before moving on to RADA, where he remained a patron until his death, Attenborough began his acting career on stage, performing in plays at Leicester’s Little Theatre, Dover Street. In Brian Desmond Hurst’s The Hundred Pound Window (1944), Attenborough played Tommy Draper, who aids in saving his accountant father, who has gone astray. This was Attenborough’s first significant credit role. Attenborough’s film career, however, had started in 1942 with an uncredited part as a sailor fleeing his post in the Noel Coward/David Lean production In Which We Serve (his name and character were omitted from the original release-print credits). This role helped typecast him for many years as a spiv in movies like London Belongs to Me (1948), Morning Departure (1950), and his breakthrough performance as Pinkie Brown in John Bo In the 1945 film Journey Together, starring Edward G. Robinson as his instructor, he performed the principal role as an RAF trainee pilot at the age of 22. He was ranked as the sixth most well-liked British actor at the box office in 1949 by attendees.
Attenborough made his theatrical debut in the West End production of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, which later held the record for the longest-running stage show in the world. He and his wife were original cast members of the play, which debuted in 1952 at the Ambassadors Theatre before transferring to the St. Martin’s Theatre in 1974. The play ran nonstop for almost seven decades until the COVID-19 pandemic forced its cancellation in 2020. It turned out to be the best business decision I’ve ever made. Still, I foolishly sold some of my shares to open a transient Mayfair restaurant called “The Little Elephant,” Later, I disposed of the remaining share to keep Gandhi afloat. The Attenboroughs took a 10% profit participation in the production, which was paid for out of their combined weekly salary. Attenborough later wrote in his autobiography, “It proved to be the wisest business decision I
