Luke Bryan Discusses Beyoncé’s CMA Snub: “Nobody’s Mad” About It

 

Last month, the Country Music Association (CMA) unveiled the nominees for its 58th annual awards ceremony, sparking reactions from fans of various artists. However, one glaring omission caught the attention of the Beyhive: Beyoncé and her album Cowboy Carter were completely absent from all categories. While Beyoncé herself has remained silent on the matter, country star and American Idol judge Luke Bryan shared his thoughts on why the pop icon might not have made the cut.

In a recent interview, Bryan addressed the issue, explaining that even in a year with outstanding music, some great albums can be “overlooked.” Speaking on Andy Cohen Live via Sirius XM on October 1, Bryan acknowledged the loyalty of Beyoncé’s fans and emphasized that sometimes, deserving albums simply don’t receive nominations.

“It’s a tricky question because, obviously, Beyoncé made a country album, and she has a lot of fans who support her,” Bryan noted. “And if she doesn’t get something they want, man, they come at you, as fans should do. But sometimes, even great music gets overlooked. Everybody loved that Beyoncé made a country album. Nobody’s mad about it.”

Radio Stations’ Reluctance to Embrace Cowboy Carter

Despite Beyoncé’s successful crossover into country music, Cowboy Carter faced resistance from several country radio stations. According to NBC, many stations refused to play tracks from the album, including its hit single “Texas Hold ‘Em,” which still managed to top both Billboard’s Hot 100 and Hot Country charts. The stations argued that Cowboy Carter wasn’t “country enough” to fit their playlists.

Bryan, however, remains supportive of artists from other genres exploring country music. He expressed his gratitude that musicians are willing to embrace the genre, even if they don’t always receive the recognition they might hope for.

“I’m all for everybody coming in and making country albums,” Bryan said. “But just because someone releases a country album doesn’t guarantee them a nomination. I’ve made albums that didn’t get nominated either.”

An Invitation to Celebrate Country Music

Luke Bryan also hinted that participation within the country music community could play a role in bridging the gap between country and other musical genres. He suggested that Beyoncé’s presence at the CMAs, regardless of her nomination status, would help strengthen her ties within the country music industry.

“But where things get a little tricky—if you’re gonna make country albums, come into our world and be country with us a little bit,” Bryan explained. “Come to an award show, high-five us, have fun, and get in the family. I’m not saying she didn’t do that, but country music is a lot about family.”

Dolly Parton Weighs In

Country legend Dolly Parton also shared her perspective on the situation, having collaborated with Beyoncé on a new version of her classic song “Jolene,” featured on Cowboy Carter. Parton, however, did not believe that Beyoncé’s snub was deliberate on the part of the CMA.

“Well, you never know,” Parton told Variety in September. “There are so many wonderful country artists, and I think the CMA probably felt they couldn’t leave out those who have dedicated their whole lives to country music.”
